Execution Date Sought for Convicted Killer

File

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita wants an execution date for Roy Lee Ward, who was convicted of raping and killing a Spencer County teen in 2001

Indiana’s attorney general is seeking an execution date for a man convicted of raping and killing a Spencer County teen nearly 25 years ago. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Roy Lee Ward was found guilty of the shocking crime that claimed the life of 15-year-old Stacey Payne.

She was a standout student and cheerleader at Heritage Hills High School.

Ward was convicted of entering the Payne family home in Dale in July 2001, and raping and stabbing Stacey.

She later died at a hospital.

Ward was convicted of the rape and murder and was sentenced to death.

Indiana Attorney Genera Todd Rokita’s request for an execution date follows a recent announcement from Governor Mike Braun that the state no longer has an execution drug.

It’s not clear when executions might resume in Indiana.
