A jury is chosen and opening arguments are delivered in the trial of a man accused of killing local disc jockey Shane Breedlove. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
29-year-old Michael Handegard is accused of fatally shooting Breedlove as he walked to work in the six-thousand block of Washington Avenue in 2015.
Handegard was among a number of people initially arrested in the case but the charges were later dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
Prosecutors took the case to a grand jury in March of this year, and the panel indicted Handegard on one count of murder.
In his opening statement yesterday (Mon), prosecuting attorney Stan Levco told the jury Breedlove was "ambushed" and "murdered" by at least one assailant, and the evidence will show Handegard either fired the fatal shots or was at the scene assisting the shooter.
Defense attorney Scott Danks says the case against Handegard is as weak as it was ten years ago, with no eyewitnesses, no fingerprints, and no evidence that Handegard had the firearm at the time of the crime.
Breedlove worked as a D.J. and soundman at KC’s Time Out Lounge at Washington Square Mall. He was a father of six.
