John Michael Stephenson, 61, is dead; he was convicted of a 1996 triple murder in Warrick County, Indiana

A man convicted of a triple murder in Warrick County nearly 30 years ago has died in prison. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Authorities say John Matthew Stephenson died at the Miami Correctional Facility in northern Indiana at the age of 61.

He was convicted of murdering Jay and Kathy Tyler and Brandy Southard in rural Warrick County in March 1996.

The trial that followed the killings was believed to be the longest and most expensive in Indiana history.

The jury issued its guilty verdict after 140 days of proceedings in 1997 and Stephenson was sentenced to death.

The death sentence was later overturned but Stephenson remained in prison until his death May 27th.

An obituary says he died from a heart attack while playing basketball at the facility.
