The local police chief and sheriff say they are not assisting with "removal operations"

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – known commonly as ICE – is conducting activities in the Evansville area. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The Evansville Police Department and Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office say they’ve received “numerous inquiries and calls from concerned citizens” about ICE activities.

Police Chief Philip Smith and Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson say their agencies were informed in advance that ICE would be conducting “enforcement and removal operations.”

In a release, the EPD and Sheriff’s office say they are not assisting in the operations.

They say they usually don’t, except in cases where an individual has committed a criminal offense unrelated to their immigration status.
