A Christmas Day fire damaged two 19th century mansions

Demolition is underway at the site of a Christmas Day fire in Haynie’s Corner. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The blaze destroyed two 19th century red brick buildings that contained the Sauced restaurant and an adjacent facility.

Owner Scott Schymick told the Evansville Design Review board earlier this month that there was too much fire and smoke damage to rebuild.

The board voted to allow the demolition but agreed to a 14-day hold to give preservation groups a chance to present ideas that could save the less-damaged of the two structures.

The efforts failed and the demolition began.

Evansville Metro Development Director Kolbi Jackson said the buildings are not in a preservation district.

Schymick has said he wants to redevelop the sites.
