NWS: Tornado Risk Increases, Historic Flooding Possible

NWS Paducah

The weather service has raised Wednesday's tornado risk to Level 4 out of 5

Forecasters are becoming more concerned about a severe weather outbreak Wednesday followed by widespread flooding. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The National Weather Service has raised the threat Level to 4, or a moderate risk, for severe storms including heavy rain, high winds, large hail, and long-track tornadoes Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Forecasters are also warning of life-threatening flash flooding through Saturday, with rainfall totals potentially reaching double-digits.

Justin Gibbs is a forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Paducah:

"We have a very strong risk for flooding and significant and potentially historic rainfall over the next few days."

A cold front is expected to stall over the region, and Gibbs says that will cause heavy rain to fall day after day after day:

"Leading to flooding in areas that do not normally flood. We urge everybody to prepare for that as well as they can, and continue to monitor for forecast updates."

Forecasters urge residents to prepare for flooding, clear drainage areas and gutters, and have a plan to move to higher ground.
