A federal judge has sentenced a former Pigeon Township official to six months in prison for his role in a kickback scheme. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
The judge handed down the sentence to William Payne after he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Payne’s sentencing was the third and final court action in the case.
Former Pigeon Township Trustee Mariama Wilson was sentenced to three years probation and construction contractor Terrance Hardiman was sentenced to six months in prison.
Prosecutors say the three conspired to inflate the cost of repairs made to a homeless shelter and food pantry in the township.
They say Payne and Wilson gained about $19,000 each in the scheme.
