The Evansville Police Department says the results are in from a community survey. WNIN’s John Gibson takes a look:
The EPD invited residents to take part in the anonymous 36-question survey over the summer, between June 1st and August 31st.
The survey was available on the department’s website and Facebook page, and distributed at public events and meetings.
The results show more than half of the 862 people who responded feel somewhat or very safe in Evansville.
More than three-quarters of the respondents say they feel safe in their neighborhood during the daytime, but the response dropped to about half at nighttime.
About a third of the respondents said they felt somewhat or very unsafe at night.
Traffic enforcement is an area where nearly half of respondents said they disagree that the needs are being met.
EPD spokeswoman Taylor Merriss says the department will respond by conducting details to enforce traffic laws and enhance safety.
Crime Prevention Sgt. Josh Brewer notes an overwhelming majority of respondents don’t attend neighborhood association meetings.
He says the department wants to better engage with the community, and the best way to do that is through neighborhood meetings.
This survey is conducted every two years in accordance with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
