The mother of four-year-old Octavia Aquino now faces a felony death charge; a 16-year-old is now charged as an adult with Murder

A mother faces an enhanced charge and a teen has been waived to adult court following the death of a four-year-old Evansville girl. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

Octavia Aquino died Sunday after being found unresponsive at an East Side apartment last week.

Evansville police say the charge against the girl’s mother, Destiny Rhoades, has been upgraded to Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, a level 1 felony.

Rhoades’ 16-year-old boyfriend appeared in juvenile court Monday afternoon and the case against him was moved to adult court.

The original charge against Christian Gonzalez, Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, has been changed to Murder.

Gonzales was moved from the Youth Center to the Vanderburgh County jail.

The coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy this week.

A roommate told police the child had marks on her neck and a human bit mark on her arm.
