Money from settlements and the American Rescue Plan will go to health services

Vanderburgh County Commissioners have approved a resolution to strengthen mental health and opioid disorder services at the county jail. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Commissioners voted unanimously to use restricted funds from opioid settlements to strengthen services at the detention center.

Commissioners say Vanderburgh County has been actively engaged in litigation pursuing damages caused by opioids.

They say settlement money from the cases will be used for treatment, education, and prevention programs for opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders or mental health issues.

Plans at the jail include a new mental health wing that will include ten beds in the Mental Health Treatment Unit and 32 beds in the Substance Use Disorder Unit.

Sheriff Noah Robinson outlined the plans to utilize the opioid funds, in addition to $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act money that was previously allocated.
