VCSO: Shooting practice near the campus was "unsafe"

A sheriff’s deputy found a bullet on a USI parking lot, after target-shooting near the campus. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson says deputies responded to a report of shots fired near the campus Sunday evening.

Robinson says officers determined six individuals were target shooting in the 1500 block of Schutte Road in an unsafe manner.

He says the individuals were cooperative, showed deputies where they had been shooting, and gave statements to the investigating deputies.

One deputy found a spent projectile lying in a campus parking lot off Bluff Lane.

No injuries were reported.

Robinson says a preliminary investigation indicated the backstop that the amateur shooting range was using was not suitable for target practice.

He says all six individuals surrendered their firearms, with a total of 12 guns seized.

Robinson says a case file will be presented to the Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The sheriff noted the odds of a deputy finding a bullet on the ground that was fired from 1000 feet away were “very long.”

He called it “some solid police work.”
