The weather service says it confirmed 78 miles of "tornado track" in the region

The National Weather Service has confirmed a-half dozen tornadoes tore through southwest Indiana early Tuesday morning. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The weather service says four of the storms were strong EF-2’s and two of them were the less powerful but still dangerous EF-1’s.

Survey teams initially confirmed four tornadoes in the area.

The agency says the storm system also packed straight-line winds of 70 to 90 mph.

The storms damaged homes and businesses, bought down trees and power lines, and left thousands of people without electricity.

As of Friday afternoon, CenterPoint Energy reported fewer than 400 customers still without power in southwest Indiana.

That’s down from a peak of 24,000 on Tuesday.

CenterPoint, contract crews, and other utility companies have been working around the clock to restore power.

The weather service recorded 78 miles of confirmed tornado track across the region.
