A state agency is recommending a substantial reduction to CenterPoint Energy’s electric rate increase. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:
The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, which represents consumers in rate cases, is recommending a $33.1 million increase.
CenterPoint is seeking a more than $118 million hike in electric rates.
The agency says the smaller increase – about 4.5 percent -- is warranted based on the case’s evidence and applicable law.
The OUCC notes 13 witnesses filed testimony this week with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, which will make the final decision.
The testimony followed a 3 ½-month legal and technical review of testimony, exhibits, and papers filed by the utility.

Hundreds of people packed an IURC hearing in Evansville two weeks ago, with 76 people speaking against the rate hike.
The Evansville City Council, Vanderburgh County Commissioners, and Warrick County Commissioners all passed resolutions opposing the increase.
The IURC’s final decision on CenterPoint’s request is expected this fall.
