Two men have been arrested after dozens of counterfeit bills were passed in the Evansville area during the holiday shopping season. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Evansville Police Sgt. Anna Gray says on multiple occasions, one suspect would purchase a low-dollar item with a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill.
Then the same suspect would ask for change for a second twenty-dollar bill.
The second suspect would then enter and make another small purchase.
Gray says the phony twenty-dollar bills were very sophisticated, and many businesses did not detect they were counterfeit until they were deposited at a financial institution.
Evansville Police detectives identified the suspects as Campanella Ford III and Isiah Holt and now, both of them have been arrested.
Neither suspect is from the Evansville area.
Ford is jailed at the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center. Holt was arrested in another jurisdiction and will be extradited to Vanderburgh County.
Ford and Holt face eight counts of Forgery.
Police say in all, at least 78 counterfeit bills were passed at more than 32 Evansville businesses in December.
