The Evansville City Councilor has announced his intention to run

An Evansville City Council member is running for the Statehouse. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Democrat Alex Burton says he’s seeking the District 77 seat held by fellow Democrat Ryan Hatfield.

Hatfield is leaving the statehouse and running for Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Judge.

Burton currently represents the 4th Ward on the City Council. The District 77 seat includes most of Evansville.

Burton would be the second black state representative in the District 77 seat. Republican Charles Decker served from 1946 to 1948.

In a release, Burton said he’s grateful for Rep. Hatfield’s service and advocacy.

About his own candidacy, Burton says it’s imperative that “rational and forward thinking legislation is both proposed and passed.”

Republicans hold a super-majority in the Indiana Legislature.
