HPD: a false phone number led to money being stolen from bank accounts

Several residents of Henderson have been victimized by a phone scam. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Henderson police say a number of residents used Google to find a customer service phone number for Chime Financial Services.

The 800 number that came up in the Google search was a false number and was answered by a person with what police called a foreign accent.

The person claimed to be a Chime employee and had the caller download a third-party app called Any Desk.

When the victim downloaded the Any Desk app, the person claiming to be the Chime employee took over the victim’s phone and used it to steal money from the victim’s bank account.

An investigation continues.
