VCSO: Moses Monroe, 38, briefly fought with another inmate and later collapsed

An inmate is dead after a fight at the Vanderburgh County Detention Center. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Sheriff Noah Robinson says two inmates fought for about 90 seconds Friday evening while resisting officer’s attempts to separate them.

Robinson says no weapons were used by either inmate and no force was used by the responding officers other than their attempts to restrain the inmates from fighting each another.

Both inmates refused medical attention but within the next hour, jail medical staff responded twice to the cell of one of the involved inmates, 38-year-old Moses Monroe of Evansville.

Monroe first complained of pain and then later collapsed.

Jail staff began CPR before Evansville firefighters arrived and took over.

An ambulance took Monroe to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office contacted Indiana State Police, which took over the investigation per sheriff’s policy.

Coroner Steve Lockyear says an autopsy determined Monroe died from Cardiovascular Disease.

The manner of death was ruled natural.
