EPD and Secret Service are investigating phony $20 bills

Evansville Police and the Secret Service are investigating reports of counterfeit $20 bills. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Evansville Police say at least twelve businesses were affected by fake bills on Wednesday.

EPD spokeswoman Taylor Merriss says two men used fraudulent cash to pay for items and received authentic money back.

Merriss says police are gathering surveillance video and have contacted the U.S. Secret Service.

She says the counterfeit bills passed the “pen test,” there is a watermark, and most other security features found on real twenties.

The only apparent flaws are the texture of the bill and a counterfeit watermark of Andrew Jackson in the lower corner of the bill which has bolder lines and is a more crudely drawn image of him.

If you suspect your business has received counterfeit money you should contact their financial institution to verify.

Businesses can also view the US Currency Page that lists all the security features on the twenty-dollar bill for reference.

Anyone who can identify the suspects is urged to contact Evansville Police.
