An inmate has died at the Vanderburgh County jail. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:
The sheriff’s office says a confinement officer found the 61-year-old man unresponsive in his cell Monday morning.
More officers and jail medical staff were summoned to the housing unit, where they deployed a defibrillator and began CPR.
Medics from the Evansville Fire Department and AMR arrived but they ceased resuscitation efforts after orders from a doctor.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the jail.
The sheriff’s office says no foul play is suspected, but an outside agency – Indiana State Police -- will conduct the death investigation, which is the sheriff’s office policy.
Authorities say the inmate had underlying health issues and was receiving regular care.
His name hasn’t been released yet.
