A new federal judge is on the bench in Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

An investiture ceremony was conducted Friday, formally seating Matthew Brookman as Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Brookman served as a magistrate judge in the court since 2015. He’s taken the seat previously held by now-Senior Judge Richard Young.

Almost all the judges and magistrates for the Indiana Southern District attended the ceremony, as well as mayors, assistant U.S. attorneys, family, and friends.

Chief Judge Tanya Walton Pratt said Brookman represents “all that is good, all that is fair, and all that is just” in the legal system at a time when “people don’t necessarily trust the system.”

President Biden nominated Brookman to succeed Young last winter.

The Senate confirmed him in March after a unanimous endorsement from the Senate Judiciary Committee.

One key to Brookman’s confirmation was the support of Indiana’s two Republican senators, Todd Young and Mike Braun, who worked with Democratic Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, to secure the confirmation.
