EFD: Extension cord started house fire in historic district

A weekend fire displaced a number of residents in a downtown apartment house. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

Evansville firefighters were dispatched to 627 SE Riverside Dr. just before 9:00 Saturday night for a smell of smoke.

EFD Division Chief Mike Larson says firefighters found a small fire in a bedroom and quickly extinguished it.

Larson said crews limited the damage, but residents of five apartments were displaced.

No one was injured.

An investigator determined an extension cord used to supply power to a window air conditioner caused the fire, which was ruled accidental.

Crews disconnected electrical service to three three-story house.
