EPD Detective "Stable" After Collapse

File

The officer had a medical issue and collapsed on Wednesday

An Evansville police detective is in stable condition after collapsing on the job Wednesday. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

EPD Sgt. Anna Gray says the officer, whose name hasn’t been released, was placing one of three female suspects into custody at the scene of a stolen van in the 1200 block of Akin Drive, when he had a medical emergency and collapsed.

Gray says another EPD officer was detaining the other two females and immediately started life-saving measures on the detective.

He performed CPR while another officer got an Automated External Defibrillator – or AED -- from one of the patrol cars and used it on the stricken detective.

Other first responders arrived and AMR took the detective to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital with a police escort.

Sgt. Gray thanked Heart Saver, the Deaconess Foundation, and the EPD Foundation for providing squad cars with AED’s.

Gray said the quick actions by officers and the quick access to the AED “certainly saved a life of one of our own.”

She also thanked Evansville firefighters, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s deputies, and AMR.
