The Vanderburgh County Coroner has issued the cause of death for a sheriff’s deputy who died during training. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:
Coroner Steve Lockyear says 33-year-old Deputy Asson Hacker died of exertional sickling.
Lockyear’s report indicates it’s a trait of sickle cell.
The manner of Hacker’s death was ruled as “natural.” The mechanism of death was ruled a “congenital disease.”
Hacker and an Evansville Police recruit fell ill at the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in March during what officials called “routine physical tactics training.”
Hacker died at Deaconess Hospital.
The EPD officer was treated and survived. It’s not clear if the officer suffered the same ailment.
