Police: DNA Evidence Solves Cold Case

Arrest made in the 1994 kidnapping and sexual assault of a young woman in Owensboro

Police say they’ve solved a nearly 30-year-old sexual assault case. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

In December of 1994, a 19 year old woman was kidnapped near Brescia University in Owensboro, assaulted, and then taken to Indiana where the assault continued.

The Owensboro Police Department says its Criminal Investigations Division recently reviewed the case and contacted Indiana State Police.

The ISP said it still had DNA evidence from the case on file that pre-dated the Combined DNA Index System.

A joint investigation and modern technology led to a suspect in Hickory, North Carolina, 59-year-old Robert Shelton.

He was arrested on charges of Kidnapping and Sexual Abuse.

Shelton also faces a rape charge in Indiana.
