Governor: Lower Flags for Deputy Hacker

VCSO

Hacker died last week during training

Governor Eric Holcomb is directing flags to be flown at half-staff in Vanderburgh County on Thursday. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Holcomb asks that residents and businesses honor and remember Sheriff’s Deputy Asson Hacker.

The 33-year-old Hacker died during a training exercise at the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy last week.

Sheriff Noah Robinson says it’s been a difficult time:

"No one at our agency in living memory can recall losing an active duty sheriff deputy. So it's new territory for us, it's deeply uncomfortable and emotional territory for us, but we’re getting by."

Services are planned for Thursday at Boone Funeral Home and Christian Fellowship Church, with a procession from the funeral home to the church beginning at 9 a.m.

An Evansville Police Officer was also hospitalized after training at the academy but it’s not clear if the two suffered the same ailment.

Indiana State Police are investigating the incidents.
