Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s recruit and the hospitalization of an Evansville Police recruit. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
The two were at the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy on Thursday when they were taken to the hospital for medical ailments that occurred during what officials called “routine physical tactics training.”
33-year-old Deputy Asson Hacker died at Deaconess Hospital.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office said the cause of Hacker’s death is pending lab tests. Coroner Steve Lockyear said the results can take up to 3 weeks to complete.
The second recruit, an Evansville Police Officer, was admitted to the hospital and was said to be in stable condition.
EPD Sgt. Anna Gray described it as a very trying time for local law enforcement.
She said police will fully cooperate with the investigation so that families and the general public are “provided a transparent account.”
