First Responders Deliver Baby Boy

File

Mother was in labor at the Lloyd Expressway and Schutte Road

Perry Township firefighters, Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies, and USI public safety officers found themselves facing an unusual task Wednesday morning. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

They were called to a medical emergency near the Lloyd Expressway and Schutte Road.

Upon arrival, they found a woman in labor -- and not enough time to get her to a hospital.

The first responders got to work and delivered a healthy baby boy before an ambulance arrived.

USI Public Safety Sgt. Jonathan Hancock says it’s not often that an EMT like himself gets to see a life begin in this world. Hancock says sadly, it’s usually the end of a person’s life he sees.

But he says the baby boy who wouldn’t wait made him relish how much he loves his job.

The new mother and baby boy were both reported to be doing well, settled in, and savoring each other's company at an Evansville hospital.
