Smoke from the Morton Avenue Warehouse as seen from the West Lloyd Expressway Monday morning

Morton Avenue Blaze Forced Lloyd Closure

Firefighters have contained a massive warehouse fire in Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Evansville firefighters were called to the Morton Avenue Warehouse at 119 N. Morton, just north of the Lloyd Expressway and west of Highway 41, at about 4:40 Monday morning.

They found a large, fast-spreading blaze engulfing the red brick structure, and soon called for a second alarm.

Flames and smoke were visible for miles around as firefighters hooked up to hydrants in the area and aerial trucks poured water from above.

A number of nearby buildings were in danger, including the Volunteers of America Hope Hall at 811 E. Franklin. The blaze forced authorities to evacuate the substance abuse rehab facility.

Crews battled gusty winds and as one chief on the scene said on Central Dispatch about an hour into battle, “we need to get ahead of the fire.”

There was no word of any injuries. It’s also not known how the fire started

The blaze forced authorities to block westbound traffic on the Lloyd Expressway at Highway 41.
