Both stepped into uncovered water meter pits

Two firefighters were injured battling a house fire in Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

Firefighters were called to 315 Read St. at about 7:30 Monday night.

The first crew on the scene reported flames on the first floor, venting out windows.

EFD Division Chief Mike Larson says crews brought the fire under control in about fifteen minutes.

One firefighter stepped into an open water meter pit on the property and was taken to Deaconess Midtown for x-rays. Larson said the x-rays were negative for any broken bones.

Another firefighter stepped into another uncovered water meter pit and suffered a minor injury. That firefighter stayed on scene.

Neighbors said there had been homeless activity at the house and the EPD was requested for an arson report.

Firefighters were called back to the house early Tuesday morning to extinguish hot spots.
