Residents Rally For and Against Supreme Court Ruling

Supporters are jubilant, opponents are angry

Both celebration and anger were on display in Evansville following the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe-vs-Wade. WNIN’s John Gibson visited two rallies:

Dozens of supporters of the ruling that stripped a woman’s right to an abortion celebrated on the pedestrian overpass above the Lloyd Expressway near Vann Avenue.

One of the participants, Amanda Keener of Chandler, said the ruling was a long time coming:

"My grandfather was alive whenever Roe vs. Wade first was enacted and it was a very sorrowful event for him. So, he asked my aunt to become a pro-life activist and now she's passed that onto me and so I'm very thankful for the opportunity."

Meanwhile, dozens of opponents to the ruling gathered at the Old Courthouse in Downtown Evansville.

The organizer of the last-minute demonstration, Jennifer Morehead, said the new ruling should raise concerns among everyone:

"This decision kind of debases the rights that have been given to people in the LGBTQ community, people of color, trans community people, and so it affects everyone, not just women."

The demonstrators marched to the Federal Building, carrying signs, chanting, and sharing stories.
