Firefighters battled fire amid downed power lines

Police have arrested a suspect following an arson fire on Evansville’s North Side. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Firefighters were dispatched to 2801 N. First Avenue just before 2:00 Sunday afternoon for a garage fire.

Division Chief Mike Larson says the fire started inside the garage and burned through power lines that knocked out electricity to three nearby homes and caused what Larson called “significant concern” for fire crews.

He said they were able to extinguish the fire in about ten minutes and no one was injured.

Larson said heat from the blaze damaged two neighboring structures and a fence. The contents of the garage were considered a total loss.

CenterPoint Energy responded and restored power.

The EPD was contacted and officers arrested 26-year-old Kenneth Randal Kirby on a charge of arson.

Smoke from the fire was visible from Evansville’s East Side.
