Firefighters Douse Stubborn Apartment Fire

Weather hampered the EFD effort on W. Virginia St.

Wednesday night’s storms caused problems for Evansville firefighters who were trying to put out a fire on the city’s West Side. WNIN’s Sarah Kuper has more:

It was just after 11p.m. when firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex at 2917 West Virginia Street. Officials arrived to find smoke pouring from the building. The direction of the wind and the heaviness of the smoke made extinguishing the blaze a struggle. An extra engine company was called to assist and after an hour, officials say the fire was finally out.

A report from EFD says the fire sparked in a downstairs apartment utility area and the flames climbed the building from there. The building was undergoing a major renovation and the fire has been deemed accidental. Only one resident was living in the building. They saw smoke and called 9-11. They escaped unharmed with their dog.

No firefighters were injured.
