Icy weather leads to dozens of wrecks

The latest blast of winter weather left a thin, icy glaze on the Tri-State Wednesday -- contributing to dozens of accidents during the morning commute.

The National Weather Service recorded a tenth-of-an-inch of freezing rain overnight, and the temperature dropped from the low 30’s to the mid-20’s just in time for the morning drive.

The result was re-freezing of some treated roads and an icy glaze on many roadways, bridges, and overpasses.

At one point, Kentucky State Police reported more than 45 accidents in Daviess (Davis) County, many of them on the Wendell Ford Expressway.

Traffic on the bypass frequently came to a complete stop.

A number of accidents and slide-offs were also reported on I-64 as well as along secondary and county roads in the Evansville area.

Road and sidewalk conditions prompted several school systems to cancel or delay classes, adding to the growing number of snow days must be made-up.
