A man accused of leading police on a chase in Warrick and Dubois (DOO- boyz) counties faces charges of murder and intimidation in Evansville.
Authorities say 28-year-old Michael Howell of Dale killed Beverly Karns at 640 Maxwell Avenue in Evansville on Saturday. Howell allegedly put Karns’s body in the back of her pickup truck and drove away.
Occupants of the home told police Howell and the 30-year-old Karns knew each other. They also say didn’t call 9-1-1 for fear that Howell would kill them and children at the home.
The truck crashed on State Road 68 near Scales Road in Warrick County. A witness called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers that Howell ran from the scene.
Howell is also accused of returning to the scene and shooting the witness, 74-year-old Charles Scales, who was treated and released from a hospital.
Authorities say the crash threw Karns’ body from the truck and Howell stole a nearby car and led police on a chase into Dubois County, where he was taken into custody.
A news release from Evansville Police says officers are working with Warrick County officials to serve a murder and intimidation warrant for Howell.
Police they’re still trying to determine the events that led to the killing.
