Cause of Hercules Ave. blast to remain undetermined

The Evansville Fire Department says it won’t be able to determine the cause of the deadly blast on Hercules Avenue.

EFD Battalion Chief Charles Hertzberger told WNIN that investigators can’t make a final determination on the June 27th explosion that leveled the house at 1717 Hercules.

Hertzberger blamed “the extent of the explosion, fire, and damage to evidence” caused by firefighters’ efforts to rescue victims.

He said the department “might suspect one thing or the other,” but cannot make a “final, fact-based determination of why the explosion occurred.”

The blast and fire killed Sharon Mand and Kathleen Woolems.

Two more adults and a child were injured and taken to hospital burn units in Louisville and Indianapolis.

A neighbor helped pull a woman and the child from the burning house.
