Changing approaches to mental healthcare in the Tri-State

We’re taking a look at mental healthcare in the Tri-State, and how access and approaches have changed in the past few decades.

Even recently, with the passage of Obamacare, more people will have coverage for diagnosis and treatment.

As we’ll hear on the program, the stigmas surrounding mental illnesses have lessened, but there still remains to be a consensus on what are effective treatments for these often debilitating diseases.

Psychotherapist Margaret Ballard talks about her practice, which incorporates traditional therapy with more creative methods, like using art or guided meditation. Ballard says she charges her clients, or "fellow travelers," what they can afford.

Finally, Cass talks with Jay Washington, a stand-up comedian, about his act, which often includes jabs at mental health. Washington is from Chicago's South Side, a place where he says, people need comedy to help alleviate the pain of violence.
