Medicaid Work Requirements May Be Gone For Good

It appears major changes may be coming to Medicaid, which insures around 70 million Americans and provides health coverage for low-income adults, people with disabilities and some children.

Hoosiers who receive health insurance through the Healthy Indiana Plan, or HIP, may have to start logging work hours. 

The state of Indiana has proposed a new program to help transition people from Indiana’s Medicaid expansion program, HIP 2.0, to commercial health insurance. If approved, the HIP Workforce Bridge program will be the first of its kind.

A number of states have tied Medicaid coverage to work requirements. But legal challenges have followed — a sucessful attempt to stop the program in Kentucky, an ongoing lawsuit in Arkansas and possibly more to come.
