As temperatures rise, Indiana lawmakers are calling for Governor Eric Holcomb to review the conditions at a women’s prison and intervene to protect inmates.

State Rep. Karlee Macer (D-Speedway) and State Sen. J.D. Ford (D-Indianapolis) spoke outside the Indiana Women’s Prison on Saturday to highlight safety concerns connected to the facility’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 13-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1990. During his 26 years in prison, he spent 18 in solitary confinement. There he corresponded with the woman he shot, Debbie Baigrie. 

She had befriended and forgiven him. This act of forgiveness was crucial in his release at 40 years of age. This three-part story is a combination of phone and in-person interviews where I talked to Ian Manuel about his story.
