Gov. Eric Holcomb is pushing back at the idea of curtailing the emergency powers he’s used throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lawmakers are "elated" after Gov. Eric Holcomb announced he’d move $400 million of CARES Act funding to unemployment insurance. They hope to avoid federal penalties that would be incurred by Hoosier employers.

Indiana environmental groups have joined several others in asking the Environmental Protection Agency to limit nutrient pollution in the Ohio River. They say excess nitrogen and phosphorus from things like fertilizer, manure, and wastewater treatment plants are causing harmful algae blooms and depriving the river basin of oxygen.

The Indiana State Department of Health reported 575 additional confirmed deaths over the last week – the most reported in a single week during the pandemic, and nearly double the high reported in April. That brings the state’s total to 7,070 confirmed deaths. ISDH also reported nearly 39,000 new cases in the last week.

There will likely be little to no new money for schools, state programs and agencies in the next Indiana state budget. Lawmakers predict a “flatline” in the budget’s first year after the latest revenue forecast.
