Absentee voting

A House committee dramatically scaled back a controversial bill Thursday that would have imposed new voter identification requirements on absentee ballot applications.

Republican lawmakers want to require an extra check of a voter’s identification on absentee ballot applications. Supporters say it’s about election security. Opponents argue it will unfairly cost some Hoosiers their vote.

About 100,000 vote-by-mail ballots still haven’t been returned to county election administrators with just days to go before they’re due.

It’s likely more than 1 million Hoosiers will have voted before the second of two gubernatorial debates takes place Tuesday – and some question whether those debates can still have an impact because of their late date.

Today is the last day for Hoosiers to request a mail-in ballot for the Nov. 3 election.
