WNIN Volunteer Appears on Jeopardy

Steve Burger

Even though he's only 19 years old and a college student, WNIN summer volunteer Sam Bernhard got his dream gig this week with an appearance on the adult version of the popular "Jeopardy" game show.

He didn't win, but Bernhard says the fact that he is one of the youngest players ever to appear on the adult game earned him a bit of pop culture icon status on social media.

Bernhard is a student at Oberlin College in Ohio. He's the son of Mark and Laura Bernhard of Evansville. Sam says he has been a fan of "Jeopardy" since he was a kid.

Listen to Sam's account of the process of getting on Jeopardy, and the hardest part of appearing on the show.

Bernhard says he first filled out an online quiz to start the process. Then, he was called to a regional audition and finally, to Los Angeles for taping in September. He says the entire process took nearly a year.

In the summer of 2013, Bernhard worked as a summer volunteer at WNIN. He says the best skill he gained from that experience was to learn to project his voice. He says that gave him an advantage over other contestants when show producers wanted to see which potential contestants might do well on television.
