Winnecke says no to governor run

John Gibson

The mayor of Evansville says he has “no plans” to run for governor.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke released a statement shortly after Donald Trump tweeted that he had chosen Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his running mate.

In the statement, Winnecke says he’s “honored by all of the encouragement to run for Governor,” but he says he has “no plans on entering the caucus.”

Winnecke says he’s proud of what he calls the “shining example that the City of Evansville has become for our great state.” He says he looks forward to working closely with the next Governor of Indiana.

Winnecke’s Chief of Staff Steve Schaefer posted on Facebook last week that Winnecke received calls over the Independence Day weekend, urging him to run for governor.

Schaefer says Winnecke gave those requests their “due consideration.”
