Water Customers on Shut-Off List Urged to Make Payment Plans

John Gibson

Officials are urging people who are behind on their water bills to set up payment plans.

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility says about 1700 customers are on the shutoff list, with $1.6 million in delinquent balances.

Customers have been protected by a state-ordered moratorium on disconnections because of the impact of the pandemic -- but that order is due to expire August 14th.

Water and Sewer Director Alan Mounts told reporters outside the Civic Center customers can arrange a six-month payment plan…

"We have already been communicating to customers to set up payment arrangements but if everybody waited until the last minute to call in, you're going to have trouble just getting through on customer service. We can't handle that call volume. So, that's a good reason to call in now and set up payment arrangements."

Mounts said customers who set-up the arrangements will avoid service disruptions, late fees, and reconnection charges.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke supported the utility’s efforts…

"We do not want to shut people off and we will do everything we can to work with people to be accommodating."

Customers can apply for a payment arrangement at ewsu.com or by calling the utility’s service line at 812-436-7846.
