Virtual Town Hall Highlights Issues

The event on Facebook Live was billed as a Pre-Juneteenth celebration.

The virtual town hall on Facebook Live had information on the census count in Evansville, as well as a panel of local African-American ministers and scholars discussing possible ways forward now that the country’s attention is on issues like police reform and equality. Doctor J.C. Campbell, the executive pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Evansville, says that all groups representing African-American interests need to start intentionally collaborating with each other to raise the level of interest on issues such as police reform.

“We’re talking about the right things, but we’re not digging deep enough when it comes to police reform. So, we talk about defunding the police, we talk about convicting officers which I totally agree with. But I think a conversation we need to have is about qualified immunity as well.”
