Vectren plans to close three coal-fired power plants and add renewable energy sources in the next four years.
In a release, the utility company said its Integrated Resource Plan will save customers an estimated $320 million over 20 years and lower carbon emissions nearly 75 percent from 2005 levels.
But Vectren plans to continue burning coal at its F.C. Culley power plant in Warrick County and add 460 megawatts of natural gas.
The Sierra Club's Wendy Bredhold says Vectren's plan is an improvement over what the utility proposed in 2016, but said it needs to phase out coal within ten years.
The group wants Vectren to make a full switch to renewable energy.
Vectren's plan for future power generation came after months of public meetings.
