Vectren Deal Will Remove Coal Ash

Vectren says coal ash from the A.B. Brown power plant will be excavated and recycled.

The Evansville-based utility company says it has filed an application with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to recover the costs associated with the ash pond remediation.

In a news release, Vectren says the company will soon begin construction of infrastructure needed to transport ash from the Posey County facility to the Ohio River for transport by a manufacturer that will beneficially reuse it.

The company says removing the material that can be reused will “greatly reduce” future cost and environmental risks, compared to leaving all the ash on Vectren’s property.

The partnership between Vectren and the unnamed manufacturer is a result of the federally mandated Coal Combustion Residuals Rule, requiring compliance measures for the long-term closure plans of coal ash ponds.

Vectren Chief Business Officer Lynnae Wilson calls the partnership an “ideal solution.”

The company, now owned by Texas-based CenterPoint Energy, signed a multi-year agreement for the excavation, conversion and recycling of up to six million tons of the ash, which is a byproduct of coal-fired power generation.
