USI Considers Switch to Division One Sports

File

The University of Southern Indiana is looking into the possibility of moving to NCAA Division One athletics.

On the university’s website, USI President Ron Rochon  announced an exploration into the “feasibility of a move to Division One play."

Rochon said the review will consider a variety of elements including “fiscal and facilities requirements and internal and external community support."

The Screaming Eagles currently play Division Two basketball, baseball, softball, and other sports as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Rochon said USI will not consider Division One football saying the required investment and facilities for that sport are "out of scope at this time."

He said the university will engage an outside consultant to review the financial requirements and form a University committee “in the coming days."

The information will be presented to the USI Board of Trustees at its November meeting.

The announcement came a week after the university reported overall enrollment dipped just below ten thousand students.
