Suspect in Fatal Pursuit Identified

VCSO

Authorities have identified the driver who died in a fiery crash while being chased by sheriff’s deputies.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner identifies the man as 19-year-old Brian Santiago Cruz of Huntingburg.

The Sheriff’s Office said Cruz was driving a Toyota Prius he had stolen from his girlfriend, when he crossed the centerline and collided with a semi on State Road 65, at St. Wendel Road, on Tuesday.

In a release, the coroner said Cruz died on impact.

The collision started a fire, and first responders got the truck driver out and he wasn’t injured.

The sheriff’s office says Cruz was found to have an active warrant for his arrest for burglary and for failing to return to lawful detention in another Indiana county.
