Sports Betting In Indiana Officially Launches Sept. 1; Mobile Still To Be Announced

Sports wagering is officially ready to launch in Indiana on Sept. 1.

The Indiana Gaming Commission unanimously adopted rules for the new betting system Wednesday.

Lawmakers legalized sports betting earlier this year. But that legislation doesn’t take effect until Sept. 1. Gaming Commission executive director Sara Tait says her staff has been working nonstop to get rules and procedures in place ahead of that date.

“Staff believes we have created a regulatory scheme that ensures the integrity of sports wagering in Indiana,” Tait says.

But mobile sports betting won’t begin Sept. 1.

“We have not received a formal request to launch mobile from any operator, yet," Tait says. "However, we have started receiving mobile-related materials and submissions.”

Tait says her staff can approve mobile sports wagering operators – as long as they’re compliant – without formal action by the Gaming Commission.

Three Indiana casinos will offer sports betting on-site Sept. 1. Eleven others – including three off-track betting sites around the state – will roll out later in the month.
