Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Chief of Police Billy Bolin announced that Officer Philip Smith will begin his tenure as Assistant Chief on January 1st.

Smith will replace retiring Assistant Chief Chris Pugh.

Smith joined the Evansville Police Department in 2013 and four years later was chosen to serve as the EPD’s Special Projects Coordinator.

He’s led the department’s social media presence and community engagement efforts and is a familiar face at community events.

Smith has also been recognized for his work in the community, both locally and nationally.

In November, he accepted the 2020 U.S. Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Policing, in the category of Innovations in Community Policing.
